Lemmings and Oh No! More Lemmings Alternative HDD Installers
Author
Description
This is an alternative installer for Lemmings and Oh No! More Lemmings which works on Trinity Ethernet Interface and ATOM systems.
Instructions
There are two installer options, a single record and a multi-record installation. The single record offers a loading experience similar to that of the floppy disk version as the main factor in the loading times is the uncompressing of the packed level data and the generation of the object data. The multi-record uses 16 and 19 records (for Lemmings and Oh No! More Lemmings respectively) as it decompresses and generates all the level and object data so it loads much faster. Also, the object data is cached so if you re-play the same level it does not need to re-load the object data.
The Oh No! More Lemmings install requires the official data disk which is normally loaded from Lemmings using a special level access code, however the install creates a standalone version which can be run simply by changing to and booting the record where Oh No! More Lemmings is installed. However, there still exists the option to load Oh No! More Lemmings from Lemmings using the access code supplied with the data disk. For this to work, either of the following install scenarios must be done:
1. Both single record installations have to be done and the name of the Oh No! More Lemmings installation has to be called "OhNoMoreLemmings".
2. Both multi-record installations have to be done and the name of the first record where the Oh No! More Lemmings installation is has to be called "OhNoMoreLem (1)".
3. The Oh No! More Lemmings install has to be in the record(s) immediately following the Lemmings installation. This option also means you could mix a single record and a multi-record install if you really wanted to. Also, for this install option it does not matter what any of the record names are so you can rename them if you don't like the default ones the installation uses.
Note that there is nothing stopping you from doing both 1 and 2 as the single record install of Lemmings will only look for a single record install of Oh No! More Lemmings and the multi-record install of Lemmings will only look for a multi-record install of Oh No! More Lemmings.
The recommended install scenario is the third one as once it has been established that there is a valid Oh No! More Lemmings install in the record following the Lemmings installation no further checks are done to look for any other Oh No! More Lemmings installations. On Trinity Ethernet Interface systems using a large SD card with many records this can significantly reduce the loading time for Lemmings as the check for Oh No! More Lemmings installations is done at the start.
Also, be aware that the multi-record installs can take a while with the ATOM installs ranging between 20 to 28 minutes and the Trinity Ethernet Interface installs ranging from 30 to 45 minutes depending on whether or not you have the Trinity v1.2 Upgrade Module.
Trivia
There are a couple of bugs in Oh No! More Lemmings which are also fixed in both the single and multi-record installer options.
Impossible Level - Crazy Level 3
Only two Lemmings can be killed and these have to be blown up at the correct point to clear a gap in each of the two platforms for the Lemmings to fall down. A late change to the explosion routine means that not enough of the second platform is removed by a single explosion hence the level can not be completed. The installer fixes this by changing the percentage of Lemmings required to survive from 96 to 94 which means three Lemmings can now be killed with two exploding Lemmings used to clear enough of a gap in the second platform.
Disappearing Circular Saw
Some levels contain a Circular Saw which kills Lemmings on contact. The animation of the Circular Saw (when a Lemming is being killed) is incomplete and appears to be missing the final four frames hence the Circular Saw momentarily disappears. The installer fixes this by patching the look-up table so that the entries that point to non-existent frame data are updated to re-use those that hold the frame data for the static frame (when no Lemmings are in range) hence the Circular Saw no longer disappears.
