Maniac Mansion is a definitive milestone in video game history, originally released in 1987 by Lucasfilm Games. Created by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, it is the point-and-click graphic adventure that revolutionised the genre by introducing the famous SCUMM engine (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion).
The game follows Dave Miller, a teenager who must infiltrate a bizarre Victorian mansion to rescue his girlfriend, Sandy Pantz. She has been kidnapped by the mad scientist Dr. Fred Edison, whose mind—along with his eccentric family—is being controlled by a sentient Purple Meteor that crashed near the house 20 years prior. The narrative blends B-movie horror tropes, 1950s sci-fi, and a strong dose of surreal humour.
Groundbreaking Features
Character Selection: At the start of the game, you choose two companions to accompany Dave from a roster of six teenagers (including the nerdy Bernard, the punk rocker Syd, and the surfer Jeff). Each character has unique abilities required to solve specific puzzles.
Dynamic Puzzles & Multiple Endings: Depending on the combination of characters you choose, the path through the game and the solutions to the puzzles change entirely, leading to several distinct endings.
The Death of Text Parsers: Before Maniac Mansion, adventure games required players to type out text commands. The SCUMM engine introduced a grid of clickable action verbs (like Open, Pick up, Use) directly interactive via mouse or joystick.
Narrative Cutscenes: It was one of the very first titles to utilise short, non-interactive animated cutscenes. These sequences showed what was happening concurrently in other rooms of the mansion, building tension and providing crucial clues.
