La Abadía del Crimen (translated as The Abbey of Crime) is a legendary Spanish video game released in 1987 by Opera Soft.
Created by programmer Paco Menéndez and graphic designer Juan Delcán, it is widely considered a masterpiece of the "Golden Age of Spanish Software" and a milestone in isometric 3D adventure gaming.
The Connection to "The Name of the Rose"
The game is an unofficial adaptation of Umberto Eco's famous 1980 novel, The Name of the Rose. The developers originally sought the official rights to the book. However, after receiving no response from the author, they opted for an alternative title. They chose La Abadía del Crimen because it was actually the working title that Eco had considered (and ultimately discarded) for his novel.
Players control the Franciscan friar Fray Guillermo de Occam (inspired by William of Baskerville) and his young novice, Adso. The goal is to investigate a series of mysterious murders taking place inside a wealthy, labyrinthine Benedictine monastery.
Gameplay and Mechanics
The game stood out in the late 1980s for its structural complexity, detailed isometric graphics, and a highly demanding gameplay loop:
- The Monastic Routine: Players cannot simply wander around at will. You must follow the strict daily rules of the monastery. This includes attending mass, gathering for meals in the refectory, and following the Abbot to the cells at night.
- The Obedience Meter: Disobeying orders or missing scheduled events causes your "Obedience" bar to drop. If it empties completely, you are expelled from the abbey, resulting in an immediate Game Over.
- Platforms: It was originally developed for the Amstrad CPC 6128 and later ported to the ZX Spectrum, MSX, and MS-DOS.
