Stratosphere - Superb!!

Just had to comment… I finally had the chance to enjoy playing via my Trinity Ethernet Interface (Courtesy of Quazar! Go get one now!!!!).

Stratosphere really is a great game. Fast paced 3D graphics, straight forward controls, a variety of enemies, exciting action mixed with a deceptively clear search-and-collect goal for each level, all make it easily one of the best games for the SAM ever made.

For starters, just having a 3D game on the SAM is an impressive pleasure not to be missed, but on top of that, it is actually a great game, and with a highly addictive difficulty curve. Now we just need a Stratosphere 2! :-D

Re: Stratosphere - Superb!!

Glad you are enjoying the game after your recent purchase of it :D

There was a lot more planned. I’ll be writing more about what was planned as part of an article in the forthcoming special issue of SAM Revival, but as a sneak taster I was experimenting with a slight update for the original (should still have bits of this on my development disks), and a full sequel which was to have been called ‘Aurora’ (only notes jotted down while writing the original, and after Stratosphere was released I went on to explore other sorts of 3D on the SAM which resulted in the initial work carried out on ‘Chrome’). Back in 2004 I spent a day mocking up some test graphics for another genre of game but set in the Stratosphere world.

Also, for reasons I’m not yet going to explain(!) back in 2005/6 I was jot down some preliminary ideas on paper for a new Stratosphere game. Again, more to be revealed in the special SR!

Re:Re: Stratosphere

Looking forward to reading, in SR! ;-) I suppose another interesting aspect, is that Thomas Harte’s 3D engine might be able to open the door to a small host of new ideas in the future as well!

Re:Re: Stratosphere

Definitely - Thomas’ work on his 3D engine is amazing! I’m looking forward to see what is made using it - I wish I had the time at the moment to have a bit of a tinker with it.

The 3D stuff I did with Stratosphere is way back in the stone age by comparison - that was written purely for one task and with as many shortcuts and optimisations as possible.
